Below is a list of just some of the wonderful literary journals and contests available for you to submit your poetry to! You may or may not be interested in those listed, or find that they do not pertain to your specific work. Always remember that there are many, many more publications out there, lists of which can be found at newpages and poets and writers.

Susquehanna Review

 

The Gist: An international journal that publishes annually based through Susquehanna University.

 

Frequency of Publication: They publish annually in both print and online.

 

FYI: With pieces that need translation they only translate in their print version due to copyright restrictions; specialize in undergraduate writing and look for work that will stick in their minds for long after they’ve read the piece; accept submissions year round and they will take up to five poetry submissions; no cost to you to submit; have a poetry contest where the prize is one-hundred dollars for the winner; submit via submittable

Redivider

 

The Gist: A reach journal based out of Emerson college and has published well known writers such as Billy Collins, Sherman Alexie, and George Singleton.

 

Frequency of Publication: Bi-annually: fall and spring.

 

FYI: May submit no more than six poems but they all must be submitted in the same document in either a word document or rtf. format; do not send in hard copies in the mail, or emails, they will not be considered; submission is of no cost to you; if published you will receive two copies of the issue that features your work; host The Beacon Street Prize which is a poetry contest that requires separate submission every spring; accept submissions through submittable and no other form

Stone Canoe

 

The Gist: Syracuse University's literary magazine that only accepts submissions from writers who have some kind of connection to the Upstate N.Y. region (Not the city).

 

Frequency of Publication: Annually in the spring.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted; allow you to submit no more than five poems and for each new poem they ask that you start it on a fresh page, and that all of your poems be in one document; submissions in either rich text, or Microsoft Word document format; submit a bio written in third person that does not exceed sixty words; allow your work to be considered for awards that suit your eligibility at no extra fee or expense; to submit to Stone Canoe it is at no cost to you; submit via submittable

 

Outrageous Fortune

 

The Gist: An online literary magazine created by undergraduates intended specifically for undergraduates.

 

Frequency of Publication: Monthly.

 

FYI: Do not accept previously published work; will accept up to five poems at a time; ask that you wait to hear back from them before you submit more work in poetry or in other genres; take email submissions and request that your cover letter be the body of your email with your poetry attached in either a word document or .jpeg form; no cost to you to submit your work; accept poetry videos

Hoot

 

The Gist: A monthly literary magazine... on a postcard.

 

Frequency of Publication: One piece published in print per month; 1-4 pieces published online per month. 

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions are accepted; $2 reading fee; fewer than 150 words per submission; paying publication if chosen for print; submit via submittable

The Blue Route

 

The Gist: A literary magazine based just outside of Philadelphia that publishes nation wide and is exclusively for undergraduates.

 

Frequency of Publication: Semi-annually.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted with no reading fee; ask that upon submission you send a contact email for a faculty member that knows you and can verify that you’re a student; work must be attached in a doc or docx. format; accept no more than five poems per submission; paying publication; submit via email

AGNI

 

The Gist: A reach literary journal which has been based out of Boston University for the past forty years and is well known for publishing the early works of well known writers before they’re “discovered.”

 

Frequency of Publication: Bi-annually.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted with no reading fee; they have their magazine in print as well as an online counterpart that is updated bi-weekly; submit through their website

The Cape Rock

 

The Gist: A prestigious literary magazine that publishes only the best poetry.

 

Frequency of Publication: Bi-annually: fall and spring.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted; do not accept submissions through email or online; ask that you include a SASE with your submission; if published you will get paid in copies of the issue that features your work; not looking for, “didactic or cute poems”

 

Fairy Tale Review

 

The Gist: A literary journal which publishes works that directly relates to, or portrays, new fairy tales.

 

Frequency of Publication: Annually.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions are accepted; publish in print and online; ask that you submit between three and five poems, or up to ten pages of poetry; submissions are in either word doc, docx., or pdf format; submit via submittable or by post

Able Muse

 

The Gist: A literary magazine that publishes traditional and metrical poetry.

 

Frequency of Publication: Semi-annually.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions not accepted; no reading fee; ask for a brief bio with your one to five poems submitted; accept submissions year round; pay in contributor copies for the print edition of the magazine; submit on their website
