Below is a list of just some of the wonderful literary journals and contests available for you to submit your creative nonfiction to! You may or may not be interested in those listed, or find that they do not pertain to your specific work. Always remember that there are many, many more publications out there, lists of which can be found at newpages and poets and writers.

Hippocampus Magazine

 

The Gist: An online publication specializing in creative nonfiction as a means of entertaining, engagementand education.

 

Frequency of Publication: Publishes material online monthly and accepts submissions on a rolling basis.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted with no reading fee; multiple submissions not allowed; not a paying publication, however the writer gets a bio and link to website or blog from published piece; ask that submissions not include the writer’s name and other identifying information; strong focus on the publication as a venue for educating and informing writers, as well as readers of creative nonfiction; in addition to essays and memoirs, the magazine publishes craft articles, book reviews and interviews; pieces given the distinction “Most Memorable” also have a chance to win prizes; submit via submittable

 

Creative Nonfiction Magazine

 

The Gist: Creative Nonfiction Magazine is an online and print publication specializing in creative nonfiction.

 

Frequency of Publication: Quaterly.

 

FYI: The publication accepts only unpublished work; paying publication: writers, if selected, are paid $50 flat fee + $10/printed page and a copy of the magazine; non-themed essays can be sent in without a reading fee if sent via the post, but a $3 convenience fee is charged if non-themed essays are submitted online through Submittable; is open to all forms of creative nonfiction (immersion reportage, memoir, etc.), but gravitate towards work with narrative structure; writers can also pitch a column and send queries they think should be featured in the magazine; submit via submittable or via the post

Sukoon Magazine

 

The Gist: Sukoon is an Arab-themed, English language literary magazine published online.

 

Frequency of Publication: Bi-Annually.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted; do not need to be Arab or of Arab origin, but submissions should be related to the diversity of cultures of the Arab world; magazine does not accept work that has been previously published; the editors’ reading period is year round; submissions accepted on a rolling basis with no reading fee; not a paying publication; “She said poetry flourishes in the margins.”—why wouldn’t you want to submit to a magazine with this quote on their submissions page?; submit via e-mail

Weave Magazine

 

The Gist: Weave Magazine is a bicoastal literary organization and print publication committed to celebrating diversity in creators and their works.

 

Frequency of Publication: Bi-Annually.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted with a $10 reading fee; multiple submissions and previously published work is not accepted; Weave is very focused on publishing the under-represented—voices of women, people of color, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender—as quoted on their website; accept comics, illustrations and visual essays; submit via submittable

 

Brick Literary Journal

 

The Gist: Brick is a literary journal with an international perspective. The journal is focused on publishing literary nonfiction, interviews, memoir and letters.

 

Frequency of Publication: Bi-Annually. 

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted with no reading fee; previously published work is not accepted; submissions should be sent via the post; paying publication; large scope to their definition of literary nonfiction: letters, visual journals and travelogues

 

Literal Latte

 

The Gist: Literal Latte is an online literary journal focused on publishing nonfiction prose, poetry and art.

 

Frequency of Publication: Bi-Monthly.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted with no reading fee; accepts submissions year round; previously published work is not accepted; submissions must be sent via the post; not a paying piublication, unless the piece wins one the journal’s contests; most issues contain a writer who has never been published before, the journal claims 98% of their published pieces comes from the “slush pile”

Brevity

 

The Gist: Brevity is a reach literary journal interested in publishing extremely brief writing pieces (750 words or less). The magazine is dedicated to publishing well-known, as well as emerging writers.

 

Frequency of Publication: Bi-annually.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted with $3 reading fee; paying publication: writersare paid $45 for work selected; also run an online blog and is open to guest writers: posts can include reviews of nonfiction titles, pieces about the writing life and reactions to news in publishing, craft essays and book reviews are also accepted for consideration; seldom accept work previously published; focus on flashnonfiction; open to the multimedia essay (graphic, video, flash); submit via submittable
