Flash Fiction

 

Below is a list of just some of the wonderful literary journals and contests available for you to submit your flash fiction to! You may or may not be interested in those listed, or find that they do not pertain to your specific work. Always remember that there are many, many more publications out there, lists of which can be found at newpages and poets and writers.

Apocrypha and Abstractions

 

The Gist: Non-profit magazine that sticks solely to flash prose, 500 words or less.

 

Frequency of Publication: Two stories published per week, every week. Monthly issues become yearly volumes, which are published in May each year.

 

FYI: Prefer pieces which are, "dark and psychological, firmly grounded in the surreal, and that make a statement in the abstract, but that refrain from gratuitous explicit sexual language and or content"; not a paying publication; submit via submittable

Atticus Review

 

The Gist: A weekly online journal with its own flash prose section.

 

Frequency of Publication: Weekly.

 

FYI: Atticus Review has closed off fiction and other categories, but is specifically calling for flash prose; simultaneous submissions accepted with no reading fee; not a paying publication; submit via submittable

Burning Word

 

The Gist: Quaterly non-profit literary journal. 

 

Frequency of Publication: Four times a year: January 1st, April 1st, July 1st, and October 1st.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted with no reading fee; submissions are accepted year-round; stories need to be 300 words or less; the cut-off date for submissions is the 15th day of the prior month for each quarter; submit via submittable

Ghost Ocean Magazine

 

The Gist: Yearly online literary magazine

 

Frequency of Publication: Yearly.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted year-round with no reading fee; 700 words or fewer for flash prose; this publication enjoys "playfulness and risk-taking, grit, edge, vividness and clarity, urgency, as well as all things dark and twisted; not a paying publication; submit via submittable

Hoot

 

The Gist: A monthly literary magazine... on a postcard.

 

Frequency of Publication: One piece published in print per month; 1-4 pieces published online per month. 

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions are accepted; $2 reading fee; fewer than 150 words per submission; paying publication if chosen for print; submit via submittable

Journal of Compressed Creative Arts

 

The Gist: A non-profit publisher of compressed creative arts.

 

Frequency of Publication: Weekly: one "compressed something" published online each week.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted with no reading fee; submissions must be 600 words or less; paying publication; submit via submittable

 

Smokelong Quaterly

 

The Gist: Publish stories that can be read in the time it takes to smoke a cigarette.

 

Frequency of Publication: Weekly and Quaterly: Smokelong publishes four times a year, while one story is chosen for online publication per week.

 

FYI: Simultaneous submissions accepted with no reading fee; up to 1,000 words per submission; not a paying publication; submit via submittable
